Art on Notre Dame. Thursday 19th Dec,2013

Thursday 19th Dec saw the launch of the Streetshow series at Notre Dame Community Hall. The Art was created and made from recycled wood used by T Brown during their current renovations on the estate. Work was also created by Mondi and live art from Venus and Laurie.
Look out for or next show on Monday 23rd December, 2013.

A tribute to Nelson Mandela at Notre Dame.

South African film maker Ben Crossman recently dropped by to document the tribute mural to Nelson Mandela at the back of the Orangery. Check it out here:

Artist Profile: Veronika

Veronika is a artist hailing from Johannesburg who recently worked on a tribute mural to Nelson Mandela on the Notre Dame estate. We had a quick chat with Veronika about art and stuff.

What inspires you to paint?

I feel i have no decision in the matter, weather to paint or not to paint is not an option for me.

It's like a nervous twitch, as if I'm ill and the only way of feeling better is to dance on surfaces with colour and shapes. 

How often do you draw?

80% of the time that i have my eyes open i light up angles in the city or in my house even outdoors
 i'm constantly looking and learning but physically on paper at least 2 scribble sessions a day.

Did you study art?

I went to an art high school  in Johannesburg South Africa
then just hung out with as many inspired artists as i could.

What is it like painting in south Africa?

AWESOME!!! Sunny, fun, a lot of attitude in that place which i dig.

Can you tell us about your work with Roger Ballon?

I've been working on a secret project that will come out early next year.

What will you be working on in the future?

Im building a time machine.

Remembering Nelson Mandela.

Today we remembered the legacy of freedom fighter Nelson Mandela who passed away recently. On hand to design the mural was Johannesberg artist Veronika who is on a brief visit to London.
Residents from the Estate joined us to remember an icon and history maker.

Artist Profile: Mondi

Mondi is an artist based in London and of Iranian heritage. Her work beautifully fuses the Persian Script with sometimes feminine imagery. We asked Mondi some questions about her art whilst she painted a picture for us.

 What inspires you to paint?

Absolutely everything inspires me. It could be anything from looking up at the sky & seeing a beautiful sunset to walking past a small piece of Art on a wall somewhere.

Does your background influence your painting?

Of course. I use a lot of Persian writing and Persian influenced designs within my work. I think cultural background is an integral part of my personal style.

What projects have you been working on?

I have been working on a lot of different projects. The most recent one is on a construction site and I was asked to paint the boards around the site to brighten up the area.

Did you study art at school?

 I studied Art in GCSE and didn't take it in A-level, but then went on to uni to study BA Fine Art and then Masters in Animation.

What do you want to do in the future?

Create even more art. Keep painting. Keep evolving my style. Keep learning. We should never stop educating ourselves. Life is a strange and beautiful thing. We need to get the most out of it.
